A paper jam is a sheet of media that has stopped moving through the printer's paper path — the guided route paper follows from the input tray, past the imaging and (in laser and LED devices) fusing stages, to the output tray. Most jams are ordinary media or feeding faults rather than serious failures, and most can be resolved by the operator.

Jams cluster into a few general causes:
- Media problems: paper that is damp, curled, wrinkled, stuck together, or outside the printer's supported size, weight, or type range.
- Loading problems: an overfilled tray, misaligned guides, or mixed media, which cause sheets to feed crooked (a skew) or several at once (a multi-feed).
- Path and component wear: worn pickup or feed rollers, or a fragment left behind from an earlier jam.
Understanding the cause matters for safety because it tells you where to expect the jam and how deep it sits. A sheet caught at the input tray is a simple, low-risk retrieval; a sheet that has traveled to the fusing area sits next to hot components; and a printer that jams repeatedly despite correct loading is signalling a component issue that clearing alone will not fix. Hazards along the paper path
The paper path is designed to be traveled by paper, not by hands, and several of the subsystems it passes are hazardous if touched while the machine is energized or hot. - Electrical — mains and internal high voltage. The printer runs on mains power, and electrophotographic (laser and LED) printers also generate high internal voltages to charge the drum and transfer toner. Technician-only. Manufacturer-only. Diagnosis and repair of the parts that carry the machine's core hazards — mains wiring, the high-voltage power supply, the fuser as a heated assembly, and the laser/scanner unit. General principles for clearing a jam safely
These are general, manufacturer-sanctioned principles — not a substitute for the procedure printed for your specific model, which shows exactly which doors to open and in which direction to pull.
- Power down first. Turn the printer off and, following the manufacturer's guidance, unplug it before reaching inside. This removes the electrical and moving-part hazards at once.
- Let hot parts cool. If the jam is near the fuser, wait the cool-down time the manufacturer specifies before touching anything in that area, and never touch surfaces marked as hot.
- Open only what is meant to be opened. Use the access doors, covers, and trays the printer indicates; do not pry open panels that are not part of the jam-clearance path.
- Pull slowly, along the path. Remove the sheet with gentle, steady pressure in the natural direction of paper travel. Do not yank it against the mechanism.
- Never force it, and never use tools. Forcing paper, or using pliers, screwdrivers, or picks inside the printer, is how a clearable jam becomes a service repair. If the paper will not come free by hand from an access area, stop.
- Account for every fragment. Torn pieces left in the path cause immediate repeat jams and can foul sensors; remove all remnants you can reach, and if you cannot reach them, treat it as technician work.
- Restore and test. Reload media squarely within the tray's limits, close the covers, power on, and run a single test page to confirm normal feeding.
Understanding jam error codes and messages
When a printer reports a jam it usually shows a message or a code — sometimes a plain "paper jam," sometimes an alphanumeric code, sometimes a location label. It is worth being clear about what these are and are not:
- They are model-specific. Error and jam codes are defined by each manufacturer for each product line; the same string can mean different things on different machines, and there is no universal, cross-brand code table. Any list that claims to decode "all printer error codes" should be treated with suspicion.
- They point to a location or a sensor, not a repair. A jam code typically indicates where along the path a sheet was last detected, or that an expected sheet failed to arrive. It is a starting point for looking, not an instruction to disassemble anything.
- Look the exact code up in official documentation. The authoritative meaning of a code is in that model's manual or on the manufacturer's support site. Search there using the exact code together with the model number, rather than relying on generic third-party tables.
- A code that persists after clearing is a signal. If the message remains after you have removed all visible paper and fragments from the access areas, it commonly means a fragment is still lodged out of reach or a sensor or component needs attention — which is the point to involve a technician, not to keep opening the machine.
When to stop and call a technician or the manufacturer
Stop user-level clearing and contact a qualified technician or the manufacturer's support when:
- Paper has torn and a piece is wrapped around or lodged against an internal component (for example, the fuser) that you cannot reach from the marked access doors.
- Freeing the paper would require removing panels or assemblies, or using tools inside the machine.
- The printer jams repeatedly even with correct, supported media and proper loading, which points to worn feed components rather than a one-off jam.
- A jam or error message persists after you have cleared everything visible from the access areas.
