What the IBM Proprinter was

IBM's own Guide to Operations (First Edition, April 1985) describes it as a small but versatile tabletop printer built around a print head with nine pins (wires); under the printer's control, those wires strike an inked ribbon to print a group of dots that form each character. The Guide to Operations states that the Proprinter accepts both cut (single) forms and continuous fan-fold forms, in single-copy or multiple-copy form up to four parts (an original plus three copies), and provides a convenient front-load cut-forms feed. Cut forms can be 76.2-279.4 mm (3-11 in) wide, and continuous forms 76.2-254 mm (3-10 in) wide including pinfeed holes. For connectivity, the parallel interface is standard and a serial interface is available as an option. In the Computer History Museum's collection, a 4201-001 unit measures about 17 in wide, 5.5 in high, and 13.5 in long (43.2 x 14.0 x 34.3 cm) and weighs 18 lb.

The Proprinter was introduced during the growth of the IBM PC ecosystem in the mid-1980s and, per the Centre for Computing History, became a top seller in that market. IBM extended it into a family of printers over the following years; IBM documentation references Proprinter models including the 4201, 4202, 4207, and 4208, with the later X24 and XL24 units moving to 24-pin heads for higher print quality.
