Photoconductor Drum (OPC Drum)

- An exposure unit that writes the image onto the charged drum with light. In a laser printer this is a laser whose beam is swept across the drum by a rotating polygon mirror; in an LED printer it is a fixed bar of light-emitting diodes. - A developer unit that brings charged toner to the drum, where it adheres to the imaged areas.
- A transfer station beneath the drum that pulls the toner from the drum onto the paper — or onto an intermediate transfer belt in some color machines — using an opposite charge.

The drum's metal core is electrically grounded through the machine's frame, which is essential to the charging and exposure steps. Downstream of the drum, but not touching it, is the fuser, which bonds the transferred toner to the paper with heat and pressure; the drum itself does not heat the page.
Physically, the drum is frequently packaged inside a replaceable module. How it works

- Cleaning and discharge — residual toner is swept or scraped away and any leftover charge is neutralized, returning the surface to a clean, uniform state for the next cycle.
A modern OPC drum is not a single uniform material but a set of very thin functional layers coated onto a metal (typically aluminum) cylinder. Industry descriptions generally identify a conductive substrate, one or more intermediate/undercoat layers, a charge-generation layer that produces electrical charges when it absorbs light, and a charge-transport layer that carries those charges through the coating so they can cancel the surface charge in the exposed areas. Photoconductor drums are distinguished mainly by the photoconductive material used, by their physical form, and by how they are packaged with the other consumables.

- Organic photoconductor (OPC) — a carbon-based, multilayer organic coating. It is the usual choice in modern desktop and office electrophotographic machines and is the reason the part is often called an "OPC drum."
- Amorphous silicon (a-Si) — an inorganic photoconductor associated with durable drums used in some higher-duty machines.

Role in print quality
