Rather than housing ink inside small, self-contained cartridges that are discarded when empty, a tank system holds liquid ink in refillable reservoirs and feeds it to the printhead as printing consumes it. Drop formation remains the role of the printhead, which may be thermal or piezoelectric. Role in Print Quality

Because a tank system supplies the same class of ink as a cartridge, it is not the reservoir type that determines print quality. The factors that govern output are the same ones that apply to any inkjet system:

  • Ink formulation — dye versus pigment and the additive package, which set color gamut, density, and permanence.
  • Printhead — nozzle geometry, drop size, and firing behavior.
  • Media — the paper or substrate and its receptivity to the ink.

Where the supply architecture can influence quality is through pressure and air management.
